As Lara Dutta Bhupathi turns a year wiser today, we take you down the memory lane to each time when this beauty queen made us proud.

1. Other than her achievements, what Lara is strongly known for is her wit. We compiled a few of her best answers that prove why she deserves every bit of the titles she has been bestowed upon with. She not only is every wise man’s dream woman but is also every strong woman’s role model and we show you why.
2. Lara took to modeling early in her life and she definitely knew she is going to make it big. Not for anything else but for sheer dedication and respect she showed in everything she did. Lara soon won the annual Gladrags Mega model India competition in 1995 and this gave her a ticket to further participate in 1997 Miss Intercontinental Pageant. And of course, she bagged the title at the said pageant, Miss Intercontinental 1997.
3. In 1999, she applied for Miss India but soon withdrew her application realizing if she ever was going to become Miss India, she was only going to be Miss India of the millennium. Not everyone would have the confidence and not everyone would have taken the risk. What happened in 2000 is now a sweet saga, she did become the Miss India of the millennium and we couldn’t be more proud.

4. More than the title, what bowled everyone over was Lara’s intelligence. At a time when people were confined to mere appearance, Lara showed everyone that she is more than just a conventional beauty and that there is beauty in strength. In her final round when Lara was asked, “If ignorance is bliss then why do we seek knowledge?” She replied, “Knowledge is something every man is endowed with and it is up to him to make use of it. Thirst for knowledge drives every man. They say every man dies but very few men really lived. And what is life without knowledge. Would you go through life without passing something on to your children?” and then what would have stopped her from getting the crown? She not just won it, but deserved it too!
5. However, after winning the title she did not get carried away by the instant fame, but rather kept her feet firm on the ground because she knew she had achieved only half of her ultimate goal. She knew she had to conquer the world by winning the Miss Universe crown and become the second only in the history of India to do so.
6. On May 12 2000, Lara Dutta did what she meant to do. She was crowned the Miss Universe 2000. After Sushmita Sen, it was Lara Dutta who got the crown back to India and made us all proud yet again! The record stands broken even today. Lara is the last delegate from India to have got the queen of crowns.

7. Lara not only won the title but also managed to achieve the highest score in the swimsuit competition along with receiving the highest individual score in any category in the history of the Miss Universe contest. Her interview saw a majority of the judges giving her a maximum 9.99 mark. That’s a proud moment again!

8. In her last interview round, she was asked to demonstrate the dance form she mastered back in India (the host couldn’t pronounce it and hence asked her to do so, which she did gracefully ' Bharatanatyam') to which she obliged saying it would require her to squat, and that it won’t be possible for her in the gown she was wearing. However, not disappointing anyone she explained the concept behind the style of dance and demonstrated three hand gestures which form a pivotal part of the dance.
9. And the answer that made her the ultimate beauty queen and made every Indian appreciate and value education, for only a well brought up and an educated- independent woman would have answered with the confidence that Lara exhibited then - She was asked, “Right now there is a protest that had been staged in outside the stadium posing pageants as an affront to women. Convince them that they are wrong.” To this, she answered, “Pageants like Miss Universe give us young women a platform to foray in the fields that we want to and forge ahead, be it entrepreneurship, be it the armed forces, be it politics. It gives us a platform to voice our choices and opinions and it makes us strong and independent that we are today.”

10. Lara was also appointed as the UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador in 2001. After winning millions of hearts not just in India but across the globe, she forayed into Bollywood with her debut Andaaz in 2003 for which she bagged the best debutant award. She definitely has always been a clear winner.
11. After acting, Lara turned into a producer in 2011 for the film Chalo Dilli and the film went on to become a decent success.
12. Dutta also launched her own skin care range, “Arias”. She mentioned in one interview, “There is always pressure on women like us who find the need to look 'perfect' all the time because we get photographed so much, but I find that nothing in our life regardless of what the lifestyle is should hold you back from looking your best. I feel that it is crucial to provide yourself the best skin food that you can afford to provide yourself with.

13. The idea was to create a skin care range using all that knowledge that I gained over 25 years as I had the opportunity to work with the best from the world. The key thing is to be able to provide everyday skin care products that are gentle, affordable and most importantly, show results. That's where Arias was born. I have used the ingredients that have proven to show results for the kind of conditions that our skin type deals with and I am thrilled with the outcome.”
14. As an actress, film producer and entrepreneur, Lara Dutta Bhupathi has been juggling multiple hats with ease. Lara also surpasses all of us by knowing Indian languages like Punjabi, Kannada, and Hindi and also international language like French.

15. Lara Dutta Bhupathi completes 20 years of Miss Universe win. We are proud of this immensely talented beauty queen and only wish her all the success in the following years to come. One cannot thank her enough for teaching women to stand up for themselves and the value of education. She also has surely raised the bar higher for men in terms of what they should seek in women.

Here's wishing Lara Dutta Bhupathi a very Happy Birthday!!
