A Miss Newark winner is raising money to support two charities after the sudden death of her mother, writes Lauren Brown.
Amy Diamond, pictured, the current Miss Newark in the Miss Great Britain pageant, is raising money for Cancer Research UK and muscular dystrophy disease charity Alex’s Wish, which are the charities allocated by the pageant organisers.
Amy lost her mum, Carole Bloor, to metastatic esophageal cancer that had spread to her lungs and lymph nodes, aged just 63, and only 19 days after being diagnosed.

Amy said: “I thought I had finished with competing, but when Miss Great Britain announced that this year’s chosen charity was Cancer Research it made me want to do it so much more.
“It’s not just about walking up and down a catwalk. It is about doing something good with your platform.”
Amy’s mother was told she had the disease in February last year and died within three weeks of the diagnosis.
East Midlands-based charity Alex’s Wish was set up to fund research, clinical trials, and more doctors and nurses for duchenne muscular dystrophy disease, which affects less than 1% of people.
Emma Hallam, founder of Alex’s Wish and mum to Alex, 13, said: “It is people like Amy that make me think a cure can be on the horizon.
“They are obviously raising the money but, more importantly, they are raising awareness as well.”
She said as Alex appreciated everything the Miss GB girls were doing for him.
“He’s even made thank you cards to give to them at the final,” she said.
Having already taken part in Cancer Research’s Pretty Muddy challenge and completing a loop-the-loop challenge with the aerobatics display team Aerosparx, Amy’s next fundraising project will see her taking part in the Ultra Ballroom challenge.
She will undertake an eight-week training programme in preparation to perform in a dance show in Derby before 800 people.
“With how brave my mum was, this feels like nothing, so I signed up,” she said
Having competed in the pageant in 2014 and 2018, Amy said she hoped it would be third time lucky.
