THERE were stares all around as five foreign ladies gave out umbrellas and bookmarks to promote awareness of cervical cancer to the public near the Bercham and Buntong wet markets.
The event, which featured five Miss International 2016 participants, was part of the cervical cancer awareness event organised by Fatimah Hospital earlier this month. Miss New Zealand Jessica Tyson, Miss Hawaii Guinevere Davenport, Miss Ireland Katherine Gannon, Miss India Rewati Chetri and Miss Mauritus Shavina Hulkua. also distributed 94 coupons for free pap smear tests during the event.
While women queued up for the coupons and gifts, several men also took the opportunity to take pictures with the beauty queens.
Following the visits to the wet markets, the beauty queens returned to the hospital to present to six more coupons.
“Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer among women in Malaysia. Early detection can prevent it.
“According to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, 4,352 cases of cervical cancer were reported in Malaysia between 2007 and 2011 - an average of 870 cases per year,” she said, adding that 76% of patients are diagnosed at a late stage.
Lim said those who received the coupons to do the test need to make an appointment with the hospital.
“The coupon is valid from now until June 30.
“We strongly recommend that an appointment is made first with our consultant obstetrician and gynaecologists Dr George Chan and Dr Moganaraju Perianan,” she said.
The screenings can be done between 8am and 5pm on weekdays or between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays.
