Meet Dr Nisha Thayananthan, a frontliner fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and also former beauty queen

In 2019, she was a finalist in one of the biggest pageants in the country, Miss World Malaysia.

She was even bestowed the 'Beauty with a Purpose' award, one of the highest recognitions a person can receive in the pageant.

It is an award that acknowledges a contestant's contribution to humanitarian causes.

Dr Nisha is currently a medical doctor at Putrajaya Hospital and is one of the few doctors in charge of the COVID-19 screening cabin

The Seremban native told SAYS, "It is so challenging to be a doctor right now as it is stressful and emotionally difficult, but we are ready to serve the nation by any means."

"My colleagues at other COVID-19 centres are overwhelmed with patients. Some have not met their family members for nearly two months now and others have been quarantined due to respiratory symptoms."

"As a doctor, I solemnly promise that I will do the best of my ability serve humanity," she added.

Dr Nisha regularly shares her experience working as a health official on her Instagram account. In one post, she wrote, "I stay at work for you, you stay at home for us."

During her free time, she drives to various locations to help those in need

Bernama reported that she has been delivering essentials like rice, cooking oil, and milk to low-income groups in Kuala Lumpur and Seremban.

"Most of the times I fork out my own pocket money to help these people and often spare my off days by engaging in charity. I've been a part of the humanitarian mission for quite some time now," she said.

"Along this journey, I've come across people who are suffering, especially during the ongoing Movement Control Order (MCO) to contain COVID-19."

The beauty queen is now working hand in hand with Persatuan Kesejahteraan Rakyat Malaysia (PKRM) to ensure aid is given to people whose earnings have been affected by the pandemic.
