Miss Finland's 1992 Kirsi Westerlund died on Tuesday at the age of 50 after years of sarcoma cancer. Over the decades, there are several sad destinies in the history of Finnish missions that have touched the entire nation. The lives of many beauties ended too early.

Just over 20 years ago, Finland's first Miss XL competition saw the light of day, where curvy beauties got to compete for the brightest crown. We lived in 1999 and Jaana Kimari from Mikkeli finally took the title of the first ever curvy beauty. She was a 29-year-old mother of the family at the time of the race.

Unfortunately, the light-cut Kimari only had time to enjoy his victory for a few years. In 2004, he and his family went on holiday to Thailand. On Christmas Day, a huge tsunami swept over Khao Lak. Kimari, her husband and the family’s 14-year-old firstborn died. Only 13-year-old twin boys were saved.

The knowledge of the fate of Kimari and his family shocked acquaintances, relatives as well as Miss colleagues. Eve Malin (formerly Jaakonmaa), an entertainment veteran who sat on the jury of the Miss XL race, remembers Kimari, even though the duo met each other only in the final round.

- I remember her face and blonde hair very well. She was a terribly nice girl, just insanely nice, Malin recalls.

News of Kimari’s holiday in Thailand quickly spread among the participants in the Miss XL competition. They kept in close touch and exchanged news regularly.

- We had a group together where we talked. The girls liked a lot. Of course, there was a lot of talk among them about this grief news, Malin says.

- It was a really big shock to hear what happened to him, Malin says.

Ilta-Sanomat said a year after the tsunami that the Kimari family had been eagerly awaiting a holiday in Thailand. In the article, acquaintances described Kimari, who also worked as a sales representative, as a friendly and respected person.

Finns missing in the tsunami were declared dead a year after the natural disaster. After the tragedy, Kimari's twin sons moved in with relatives. The Miss XL Games, on the other hand, were last measured in 2013.

The model promise remained under the train

Piikkiöläinen Saara Viljanen dreamed of a mission and model work from a young age. A happy, beautiful and sprawling young woman worked hard to gain a foothold in the field.

Viljanen had a long career in mission and model circles even before he came of age. She was on the lists of the Turku-based Fashion Team from the age of high school. The beauty, who won the Miss Turku competition, was finally chosen as the most beautiful face of the Miss Beauty of the World competition held in China.

This happened almost to his day a year before his death.

In September 2008, Viljanen, who was only 18 years old, was left under a train on the line between Turku and Helsinki, between Kupittaa and Piikkiö. Young life ended at half past two in the afternoon.

The grief news spread quickly and shocked Viljanen's close circle and model friends deeply. Numerous candles were immediately taken to the scene of the accident. Friends had also brought flowers and pictures of their deceased loved one to the scene. On Facebook, her friends missed Miss Finland's Lola Odusoga, among others.

- I miss one of the most authentic and beautiful people the country has worn. I can’t understand your departure, it hurts, it hurts ... So much you gave and so much you took with you, Odusoga mourned on Facebook.

The sudden departure of the young model promise is still remembered. Viljanen, who studied to be a nurse, was known to dream of Miss Finland's crown, but that dream did not come true forever.

Finland's saddest mission

The story of the dark-skinned Ritva Lehto is one of the saddest in the miss world. Lehto, who comes from Kangasala, did not actually dream of a mission, but applied for the Miss Finland competition at the urging of his sisters. Lehto, who had studied Finnish at the university, had always been a bit shy, but eventually made his way to the missile stages in 1967.

The victory and the success that followed came as a bit of a surprise to the small town grower. In the spotlight of the public, Lehto did not feel comfortable at all. Lehto later said in dismay that “money is coveted everywhere and everyone who is in good faith and childish is tried to be stuck”.

Lehto tried to leave his missile reputation behind and began his studies as a nurse. During the dances of the Finnish Association in Turku, he fell in love with Aarne Oikarinen, Bachelor of Medicine. The duo fell deeply in love, but Lehto had to drop out of school after repeatedly receiving strange illnesses.

Love was nonetheless crowned at the wedding. The couple was married in Kangasala on the last day of July 1971. Nine days after the wedding, something shocking happened: Lehto ended his life through his own hand. He had an illness that affected both his physical and mental condition.

Widowed Oikarinen broke the silence about his wife's fate only 40 years after the tragedy.

- The sudden departure of my newly married wife was incomprehensibly heavy for me. It is still a difficult place, Aarne Oikarinen told IS in 2011.

- We were very happy together. But no matter how close a person is to another person, he or she does not always know how to help, Oikarinen said.

The circle closed when Ritva Lehto's blessing was delivered by the couple's inaugurated pastor. Lehto got his last resting place from his hometown of Kangasala.

The bumps of life drove into a downward spiral

Armi Aavikko, a blond girl from Helsinki, charmed the people with her captivating smile in the Miss Finland competition in 1977. At that time, no one knew that the young woman Taipale, crowned Miss 18 at the age of 18, would end in the limelight decades later in the most inconsolable way.

Armi's life changed completely when she met singer Ilkka “Danny” Lipsanen during her mill year. He quickly rose to the sensation of the whole crowd after starting to perform and sing along with Danny. The duo recorded the legendary The Will to Be Affectionate song for Arm's Miss Year.

Danny and Armi fell in love fervently, but the relationship was kept secret. Love withered in 1992 as Danny held on to his family and wife. Armi took the resignation heavily, and in the same year his sister also died. Armi contracted depression and had to resort to psychiatric medication.

- On stage, I can forget my own grief, Armi told IS in 1993.

However, other collaborations with Danny were dug up at Arm’s wish a few years later.

Alcohol had also entered the picture, driving Armin into a downward spiral. Danny tried to help the Army and provided financial assistance for his treatments at the outpatient clinic and visits to psychiatrists.

Armi tried to get a grip on life to the end. In its last years, religion became increasingly important. Life showed a brighter side when she got engaged to Esko Kuusela in 2000. The wedding was to be celebrated in January 2001. However, it was canceled.

Armi, known to the whole nation, was found dead at his home on January 2, 2002. He was 43 years old. The ultimate cause of death was untreated pneumonia. No one knew how sick Armi had actually been.

- Armi was too weak and life's disappointments too great, Armi Aavikko's mother Anja Aavikko told IS when her daughter's death turned ten years old.

A long battle against cancer

The 1972 Miss Finland Maj-Len Grönholm (nee Eriksson) remained in public long after her coronation. Grönholm, who charmed Miss Finland, was not only satisfied with the work of the model, but the educated and determined woman was a Master of Philosophy, a University Researcher and a special needs teacher. Grönholm ended up working as a principal at Lohja Swedish-language upper secondary school and also served as a city councilor.

The biggest ordeal of Grönholm's life was cancer, which he first contracted in 2002. IS said that information about breast cancer dropped Grönholm lightning straight from his legs, but he tried to keep his mind calm in spite of everything.

- I am very optimistic, Grönholm commented.

The disease recurred in 2007, when metastases were found in the liver. Grönholm had to retire from his job as headmaster in the spring of 2009. The duties of the headmaster of the Swedish-speaking secondary school in Lohja had eventually become too heavy in addition to cytostatic treatments.

- I have all in all had a nice life and I have found favor lot of good. This is now my struggle, a great ordeal, after which I will certainly be able to appreciate his health and other things in a new way again.

Grönholm was known as the heirloom of positivity, and not even a serious illness overcame this trait. Even for years, he always remembered with great warmth. The experience left good memories and the publicity brought by the mission had only been useful in life afterwards.

Grönholm, who was chosen as the most beautiful in Finland, finally fell asleep at the end of June 2009. He was 57 years old when he died. She was missed by her husband, three children, a large close circle and numerous colleagues.
