Corine Spier-Rottschäfer, the first Dutch woman to be named Miss World, died Thursday morning at the age of 82, her family reports to the ANP news agency.
Spier was named the most beautiful woman in the world in 1959, having previously been voted Miss Holland and Miss Europe. With the prestigious award she also won 4,000 florins and a car with 16,000 kilometers of gas coupons from a gas station.
In the second half of the sixties, Spier grew tired of modeling and founded the first professional modeling agency in the Benelux with Corine’s Agency. The old model gained international fame with the company.
In 2002, Spier retired. She was married to Edo Spier, an architect and former Member of Parliament for the D66 since 1962.
