The streets of Aaidana, a small village in the Rajasamand district of Rajasthan, erupted with a joyous celebration on Wednesday as people came out in hordes to welcome Suman Rao. After winning the titles of Miss World 2nd runner-up 2019 and Miss World Asia 2019 in London, Suman reached her hometown Aaidana to a rousing reception by family, relatives and neighbours.

A huge crowd welcomed the 21-year-old ‘Suman Bai Sa’, as she is referred to by the villagers. In a sight to behold, people turned up in their traditional attire to hail their laadli. Later, people took out a procession led by a band to the thumping beat of dhols, while Suman, who was sitting in an open jeep, waved at public. She first reached the local stadium, where she was felicitated and honoured by the dignitaries in her village. Then she kicked off a cricket match on the grounds.
As Suman’s proud grandparents welcomed her in her paternal house with a tikka and a garland, they beamed with happiness. Her father Ratan Singh Rao said, “We are blessed to have a daughter like her. Beti ho toh aisi.” He adds, “She has debunked the age-old myth of a traditional society, according to which girls were treated as a burden. She has become a role model for the girls not just in metro cities but for those living in a small village like Aaidana.”
Suman’s mother, Sushila Kanwar, who was clad in a green-coloured Rajputi poshak, shared, “Everyone is so happy to receive her here once again. Last time, she won the Miss India title but this time she has crossed the border and bagged an international title. We were all glued to our TV screens at our home in Mumbai, watching the pageant live. But they showed only till the announcement of the first winner and we had no clue that our daughter had won the second runner-up title. It was only when Suman gave us a call and shared the news that we came to know. We were all pretty sure but when she confirmed it, I felt like there is nothing better than this.”
Later in the day, Suman also visited the Princess Diya Kumari Foundation in relation to her philanthropic social outreach programme. She launched the second centre for her Project Pragati, in collaboration with the princess Diya Kumari Foundation at Deogarh, Rajasamand district. Focussing on the development and upliftment of rural women, the project aims to provide sustainable livelihood. Suman met these women, inquired about their project and encouraged them.
While talking to us, she said, “We are working for the expansion of this project so that more women get skill training and become independent, financially as well as socially.”
