Kara McCullough, Miss USA 2017, speaks to students at STARBASE Louisiana on Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, May 15, 2018. McCullough visited ahead of the 2018 Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageant in Shreveport, Louisiana. The STARBASE program is a U.S. Department of Defense initiative that helps students learn practical applications in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. McCullough, a nuclear scientist with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, spent almost two hours engaging with the students about the importance of STEM.
