Bolivia’s Lenka Nemer, an activist for human rights, social justice, and gender equity won the first “Social Impact Award” at the 69th Miss Universe competition.

As the winner, she received $10,000 (P477,865) to boost her initiatives on hunger and social development.

“I am an activist for human rights, I always wonder why so many people are suffering,” Nemer said in her Miss Universe Up Close video. “Activism for human rights, gender equity, and sustainable alternatives for our world is the result of actually working for it to be different not only for me but for the ones I love and the ones that are to come.”

Nemer is an International Affairs graduate who hopes to use her voice to speak up about hunger, education, gender equity, and gender violence.

After struggling with food security as a child, Nemer founded the “Huertos Urbanos Bolivia” initiative that calls for action against hunger.

Nemer also organized workshops to educate about gender equity and violence in partnership with local institutions and universities.
