Sabrina Victor, 23, said the win was important not just to her, but the whole community.

BROCKTON — The new Miss Massachusetts USA is one of Brockton’s own.

Sabrina Victor, 23, a Brockton High School graduate, was crowned Sunday. She will go on in the summer to represent the city and Massachusetts on the national stage.

“I’m still waking up from feeling like I’m in a dream,” Victor said. “I feel like it’s a win not just for me, but for the community.”

People from the city and the Haitian-American community have reached out to her after hearing about her win, she said.

Victor said her mother and older brother have been some of her best supporters and were at the Burlington Marriot to see her crowned Miss Massachusetts USA.

Preparation for the national pageant starts now, she said. Victor said she wants to stay healthy and stay grounded in her roots going into that competition.

Victor said she likes pageantry because it is an opportunity to “present your best self.”

She also wants to be part of a shift in pageants to show that they aren’t just about looks or one standard of beauty, she said.

Victor wants to be a role model, especially for girls and women of color.

“I want to show other people ‘Yes, you can do it,’” she said. “If someone says no, you tell yourself yes.”

Last year, Victor made it to the top five of the Miss Massachusetts USA competition — her first with the organization.

Previously, Victor was the national Miss Black and Gold, which is a scholarship pageant through Alpha Phi Alpha, the first African-American fraternity.

She competed in her first pageant competition in junior year of college at UMass Amherst and went on to complete several more.

Although she was born in Miami, Florida, Victor considers Brockton her hometown because it’s where she made close friends and found her passion for theater.

As Miss Massachusetts USA, Victor wants to share her passion for theater by working with students and advocating for the arts. She plans to work with organizations, schools and groups across the state that empower youth.

Currently, she is a member of the creative direction team in the Brockton High fine arts program, which involves helping with shows and casting. She also mentors students.

“I love those kids and I love going back,” Victor said.

As a student at Brockton High, Victor found her passion for performing and was part of theater productions.

She went on to study theater and journalism in college.

Victor considers herself a performance activist, meaning that she tells stories about issues like immigration or police brutality. Being a performance activist includes telling diverse stories, she said, and is a way to speak truth and change narratives.

She continues to work as an actress in the Boston area while balancing a job at Bridgewater State University.

“It’s like I have two full-time jobs,” she said.

Things are only going to get busier with the year ahead of her as Miss Massachusetts USA, Victor said, but she is looking forward to it.
