Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray flashes a smile at the end of her homecoming parade last Saturday. Her headpiece, which resembles the iconic Mikimoto crown, is noticeably missing a piece after it fell off during the parade. Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News
MANILA — Dancing and waving during a significant part of her Saturday homecoming parade, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray kept her gleeful energy even as a piece from her pageant crown broke off while she was on board the grand float.
Gray was interacting with fans who lined the streets of Cubao, Quezon City when a portion of the crown fell. Luckily, she caught it and then handed it to her Miss Universe handler, Esther Swan, who also on the vehicle.
That her crown was missing a piece didn’t appear to bother Gray, who continued waving and was all-smiles until the end of her second parade.
The moment was captured by the event livestream of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. on its social media channels — a cut of which was posted by Catriona Universe, a popular fan page dedicated to Gray’s Miss Universe reign.
It was not immediately clear if the head piece, which appeared to be the iconic Mikimoto crown, was the actual one conferred on Miss Universe winners from 2002 to 2007, and then on 2017 and 2018.
The Mikimoto crown, which depicts a rising phoenix and is made with pearls and diamonds, reportedly costs $250,000 or nearly P13 million.
