Clarendon street to be named in Davina Bennett's honour

MIDDLE Street in Mitchell Town, Clarendon, is to be renamed in honour of Davina Bennett, Miss Universe Jamaica 2017.

Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie on Tuesday called for a resolution to be moved at the next sitting of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation council, for the street be renamed in her honour.

Bennett, who is fromVegas Middle Street, was the second runner-up at this year's Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas, United States, recently.

“I make a further commitment that once this is done we will provide the necessary resources so that the road can live up to the new name that it will receive,” the minister said.

McKenzie gave the commitment on Tuesday at the Clarendon Municipal Corporation's Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Carolling Ceremony before presenting a copy of a citation that was read to Bennett.

Bennett was also presented with the key to the township of May Pen, in recognition of her achievement in promoting and showcasing the cultural diversity of Jamaica locally and internationally, a release from the corporation said.

Bennett accepted the honour bestowed upon her with much pride and gratitude.

“I can truly assure you that this means a great deal and this is a moment I will treasure, and it will endure with me forever,” she is quoted as saying in the release.

Bennett also promised to continue doing her best to advance the cause of the town of May Pen and to inspire and assist wherever she can.

“Not only for the wonderful town of May Pen and its citizens but indeed the entire Clarendon, so don't hesitate to call upon me,” she said.

In the meantime, a mini gospel concert followed the tree lighting ceremony. The release said it is the first year that the Clarendon Municipal Corporation was hosting a gospel concert after ceremony. The crowd was blessed by the voices of Clarendon's very own Howard Brown, Jodian Pantry Dian Barnett and Minister Sandra Brooks, the release continued.
