Voting for ‘People’s Choice Award ends Aug. 16
It’s been an exciting week for Miss Newfoundland & Labrador Mackenzie Dove.

The 23-year-old Clarenville native is in Toronto competing for the title of Miss Universe Canada 2018.

She is also running for the People’s Choice Award, which opened for online voting in July, and closes Thursday, Aug. 16, at 1:30 p.m., Newfoundland Time.

The award offers an opportunity for contestants to fast-track to the Top 20 and to the final round of competition.

People may vote every six hours (four times a day), per IP Address. Simply click the link below, select Mackenzie Dove’s name from the list of delegates, and click ‘Submit Vote.’

Dove spoke with The Packet by phone on Wednesday. Since arriving in Ontario Aug. 10, she’s been engaged in a gamut of activities, including various rehearsals and gatherings.

“It’s been a great experience already,” said Dove. “There’s 44 of us, and we’re becoming so close. It’s a really empowering experience being around so many truly amazing, intelligent and confident women.”

She also delivered a humanitarian presentation worth 25 per cent of her score. Dove spoke of an online fundraiser where she sold products from the Lightkeeper’s Fudgery in Twillingate, in aid of SOS Children’s Villages. The N.G.O. has projects in Nicaragua that aim to make computer-technology and internet more accessible.

The pharmacy student has received many messages of support from home, which she says has helped in keeping up her positive energy.

“Thank you so much to everyone. I feel like I have the whole province behind me, and it’s a truly amazing feeling,” says Dove.

The pageant moves into preliminaries on Thursday, while the interview portion of the competition takes place on Friday. Finals conclude on Saturday, Aug. 18.
