Culture Minister explains the choice of producer for the Miss Gibraltar pageant after complaints it did not go out to tender

The Minister for Culture has told GBC the reason why Gibmedia was chosen to produce this year's Miss Gibraltar Pageant was because it was placed second in last year's tender process.

The announcement earlier on this week drew criticism from Yalta Dance Studios who produced the show last year. YDSsaid the direct allocation for Miss Gibraltar 2020 had not allowed YDS, or other interested producers, to submit a bid for one of Gibraltar’s most anticipated local productions.

John Cortes said Gibraltar Cultural Services is under contract with the Government to organise events on its behalf throughout the year, including May Day, the Spring Festival and Calentita. He said GCS will be more directly involved in this year's Miss Gibraltar show than in the past but adds the production is all that the Government is outsourcing.

When pressed further by GBC about the decision to sub-contract GibMedia this year, Dr Cortes said he had nothing further to add.
