Culture Ministry to review Miss Grand Cambodia pageant

Minister of Culture and Fine Arts Phoeurng Sackona said yesterday that the ministry would review the Miss Grand Cambodia pageant and take appropriate action if necessary.

The Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, and the Ministry of Information will meet with Mohahang Company today to review the Miss Grand Cambodia pageant, which was heavily criticised by the public because Cambodian women wore outfits on stage regarded as erotic and inappropriate on August 24.

After the incident, Prime Minister Hun Sen issued an order to Sackona to review the pageant and take action on the company owner.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Long Ponna Sirivath, said that the Ministry ordered the owner of the Company to make changes regarding the use of playing cards and dice to represent Stung Treng province with an image of Angkor Wat in the background.

He said that mistakes continue to occur with the issue of the candidates’ sexy dresses, which seriously affects the honour and value of Cambodian women.

According to Ponna Sirivath, the Ministry will look into the matter from a legal perspective and may take action if necessary.

On August 26, Stung Treng provincial authorities and the public condemned a Miss Grand Cambodia model, who wore a sexy dress promoting Stung Treng province without seeking permission from the provincial administration.

The Stung Treng provincial administration said that the performance seriously affected traditional Cambodian culture, especially the dignity of Cambodian women, and requested the owner of Mohahang Productions to make changes to the pageant and publicly apologise.

“The provincial administration strongly urges the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and the Ministry of Information to review and take action in this case to protect the beautiful and traditional culture of our Cambodian women,” Stung Treng provincial administration said in a statement.
