Minutes from landing in the British territory, the aircraft dipped below wispy clouds and out emerged the Virgin Islands floating on perfectly turquoise waters decorated with corals. Manushi Chhillar’s next thought was as clear as sea beneath her.

“I have never seen anything more beautiful in my entire life. I can promise you that. The water was so clear, I could make out the boundaries of the coral reefs below,” the well-travelled reigning Miss World said.

“I never anticipated how much I would fall in love with this place.”

She along with Chairwoman of the Miss World International Organisation, Julia Morley and other continental pageant queens were welcomed on Sunday when they arrived at the Terence B Lettsome International Airport.

The 20-year-old Indian beauty and her delegation are now a mission to assist the territory, which was ravaged by two category-five hurricanes last September.

“All I can say is that I am honoured to be a part of this mission – to be able to take this back to my country to show the world how irrespective of what has happened; how warm and welcoming you all have been. How smiling and vibrant everyone has been. Everyone is so happy still,” Chhillar said.

Miss World meets Governor

So far, she has met BVI Governor Augustus Jaspert and Premier Dr D Orlando Smith.

Chhillar officially began her philanthropic duties in the territory at a charity fundraising gala on Sunday evening.

Proceeds will primarily go towards rebuilding the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, a school for children with special needs. It was severely damaged during the hurricanes and will need roughly $1.4 million for it to be rebuilt.

Chhillar and the Miss World International Organisation has donated $12,000 to the educational facility.

During her visit, Chhillar will be meeting with other locals and will also be engaging in cleanup exercises at the special needs school.

Other royalties in the BVI are 2016 Miss World Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico, Salonge Sinclair of Jamaica, Annie Evans of New Zealand, Ha–Eun Kim of Korea, and Andrea Meza of Mexico.

They will be in the territory until March 1 but said they plan on returning to vacation in the islands.
