Model Brittany Mason has admitted she doesn’t think Miss Universe should ever get rid of the swimsuit competition, ahead of Irish contestant Cailin Aine Ni Toibin taking to the pageant stage next month.
Brittany took over as director of Miss Universe Ireland this year and helped to crown the Cork beauty.
While the swimsuit competition leaves some unimpressed, Brittany insisted it shouldn’t be done away with because it promotes a healthy body image.
“On a personal level, I like it, I love it. I love getting up there in a bikini and rocking the runway. I worked so hard for that moment, mentally and physically,” she said.
“It’s more of a mental thing, really, because you have to have a lot of confidence to get up there.
“Ireland and other countries out there have struggled with obesity and this is promoting a healthy lifestyle.”
Cailin described Miss Universe Ireland as a “quieter” competition before Brittany became the owner and the model was thrilled with how it was received.
“I was so happy with Miss Universe Ireland. It was everything I wanted it to be,” she said. “We leave on Friday to go to New York and then we’re going to Vegas. The competition is on November 26.”
Speaking about Cailin’s demeanour ahead of the competition, Brittany said she is surprised at how calm she is.
“If Cailin is nervous, I haven’t seen it. She’s cool as a cucumber. She’s very focused right now,” Brittany told the Diary.
“She’s really surprised me, she’s really proved herself to have this title.”
Cailin (23) had previously tried out for Miss Universe Ireland in 2015 but lost out to Joanna Cooper.
There was no Irish representative in last year’s competition.
