Kya Pedrick – Miss Universe Australia 2020 Finalist Interview

Today we are talking with Kya from WA on of the twenty-eight. Talented and inspiring women from all walks of life who are vying for the title of Miss Universe Australia 2020.

In what has certainly been an unpredictable and unprecedented year of ups and downs we’re thrilled to bring you our ninth year of Miss Universe Australia finalist interviews.

So Kya, why don’t you tell us about yourself?

I’m 24 years old and currently a dental assistant with a massive love for the snow and snowboarding, I have previously spent two years travelling around Canada and hope to travel abroad again as soon as possible.

The Miss Universe Australia program has been on hold since earlier in the year and now making its way towards a virtual final to be held on October 28, What motivated you to enter the Miss Universe Australia Program?

I enter the program as a way to challenge myself and push myself out of my comfort zone; public speaking has never been a strong point for myself. The program has also given me the confidence to speak at large about the issues I’m passionate about.

This year has been like no other, how have you been coping so far and what’s been the biggest challenge and positive that has come out of it all?

I have been coping well, all of the Miss Universe girls have been so supportive, and we’ve all tried to keep each other’s spirits high.

The biggest challenge so far has been not being able to see each other in person, which is a major part of the competition, meeting like-minded women from all over the country. I’m very thankful for the WA girls we have all become such good friends, and they have been by far the best thing to come out of my Miss Universe Journey.

With everyone bringing such an individual flair to the competition, what do you think is something that will set you apart from the other contestants?

I think it’s very hard to pinpoint my own ‘flair’, but I hope by being my genuine self, and the judges will be able to see the growth I have experienced since the beginning of the program.

The winner of Miss Universe Australia 2020 will also receive the prestigious Minespec Parts grant worth $20,000 to spend on your education or business startup, what would you do if you received this grant? And would you say your answer has changed now during the current COVID climate?

I would spend the 20,000 on a recycling initiative throughout orthodontic practices where people can bring back their used aligners and have them recycled correctly.

Anywhere with snow

Have you taken up a new hobby, skill or learnt a new dish during lockdown?

I actually started crocheting! I made myself a jumper and am currently making my dad a beanie.
