KwaZulu-Natal’s Lebogang Mahlangu and Matsepo Sithole worked with the Red Cross in the province to assist with providing hot meals and medical attention to those in need.

Lebogang Mahlangu spent her 67 minutes with the Red Cross Society volunteers in the Tongaat township.
The Miss South Africa Organisation, in conjunction with the pageant’s sponsor, Brand South Africa, took part on Mandela Day, with the 15 semi-finalists making a difference in their provinces and communities around the country.

KwaZulu-Natal’s Lebogang Mahlangu and Matsepo Sithole worked with the Red Cross in the province to assist with providing hot meals and medical attention to those in need.

Mahlangu said, “I spent the day with four Red Cross Society volunteers in the Tongaat township, preparing meal parcels which we distributed in a nearby community of about 200 people. The experience was humbling as all this was prepared in one of the volunteers’ homes and seeing people, who themselves have very little, sacrificing their time and resources to help others, was inspiring. I believe this is the true picture of Ubuntu and is something we should aspire to.”

Sithole worked with the Pietermaritzburg Municipality, Greater Edendale Mall (GEM) and Umpheme Development in a clean-up campaign. She also visited wards within the Edendale area, distributing food parcels.

Matsepo Sithole spent her Mandela Day participating in a clean-up campaign.

“I have to say that it was an amazing day and I really enjoyed making a difference and playing my part,” she stated. In other parts of the country, Gauteng-based Anarzade Omar, Aphelele Mbiyo, Busisiwe Mmotla, Chantelle Pretorius, Shudufhadzo Musida, Karishma Ramdev, Melissa Nayimuli, Natasha Joubert and Olin-Shae de La Cruz participated in a number of different activities throughout the day, including helping children paint a mural at the Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre in Alexandra, joining The Pad Run at Musawawa settlement in the East Rand, distributing sanitary pads to young girls and working at a soup kitchen run by the Ikhemeleng Foundation in Diepsloot.

Cape Town’s Jordan van der Vyver helped out at Ladles of Love in the morning making sandwiches and at the Woodstock Brewery in the afternoon peeling vegetables for a soup kitchen, while North West resident, Thato Mosehle was involved with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, visiting destitute families and distributing food parcels in Potchefstroom.

In the Free State, Palesa Keswa assisted the Red Cross with providing food and other essentials to those in need, while in Eswatini, Savannah Schutzler got involved with Solidarity Eswatini and its Yebo Action, distributing food parcels, blankets, clothes, sanitary items, masks and hand sanitiser to vulnerable communities in Ezulwini.

Miss South Africa Organisation CEO, Stephanie Weil, said, “We are so proud of all the girls, who willingly, and with much enthusiasm, gave off their time to make a difference on Mandela Day.”

Miss South Africa is presented by Weil Entertainment in association with M-Net, Mzansi Magic, Sun International and Brand South Africa. Visit www.misssa.co.za for more information.
