Karishma Ramdev hopes to inspire other young women to pursue their dreams.
While growing up, the beautiful and intelligent Karishma Ramdev often dreamed of becoming Miss South Africa and a doctor, both of which the 23-year-old is currently pursuing.

The former Chatsworth resident, who is a fifth year medical student at the University of Pretoria, has become a KZN regional qualifier for the Miss South Africa pageant and her next step is to be one of the girls in the country who make the top 12 finalists.

Speaking to the Rising Sun, the passionate student said, “Ever since I was a little girl, I have always had two dreams. One was to become a doctor and the other was to become Miss South Africa. I am now pursuing both those dreams at the same time and it is the most exhilarating feeling knowing that both may become a reality.”

According to Ramdev, something that is close to her heart is helping children with cleft lips and palates as more often than not, they are excluded from society for a condition that is medically fixable.

“I have a deep passion for this. It is not only medicine, I believe it is art, mathematics and engineering all in one. My biggest dream yet would be representing my country on the international stage as Miss South Africa 2018,” she added.

Ramdev was born and brought up in Chatsworth where she resided until she matriculated at the age of 18.
The talented model explained that she grew up with a desire to help others which is why she pursued a career in medicine.

“I remember packing plasters in my school bag so if anyone got hurt, I could put one on them. The field is very interesting to me with all its different specialties. It was also knowing that I wouldn’t have to sit behind a desk for eight-nine hours a day, but that I could consult and operate. I feel deeply grateful and humbled. I’m just in awe of how things are falling into place and that my hard work wasn’t for nothing,” added Ramdev.

She was inspired by the newly crowned Miss South Africa and said that she has always looked up to the contestants. She is greatly moved by the difference they have made in society.

She added, “I, too, want to make a difference. I also know how important it was for me as a child to have Indian people whom I could look up to, knowing that they came from the same cultural background. I want to represent the Indian community as I feel that we aren’t represented enough. I want young aspiring girls to know that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.”

In addition, the youngster who is involved in community work, is also a feminist. “I want you all to know that it doesn’t matter where you come from in life, it’s where you end up. Work hard, have a clear plan for your life and know that you were born with all the abilities to achieve your dreams. Our country needs young aspiring ladies who are able to make a difference in the lives of others. Look in the mirror and know that you can be that difference,” she concluded.
