SELIBE PHIKWE, BOTSWANA — The newly crowned Miss Botswana 2019, Oweditse Phirinyane never imagined her life would turn out like this when she was surprisingly announced the winner of the country’s top pageant at The Factory in Selibe Phikwe this past weekend.

This was despite her passionate pursuit to secure a coveted spot in the finale all the while countering opposing views as espoused by the people’s choice in Uua Murangi, the First Princess and Second Princess Winfred Motcher.

Perhaps feeling the pinch of trying over and over again, in August, the newly crowned queen had declared that the Miss Botswana 2019 edition will be her last – somewhat a premonition as this is now her time to shine.

As the newly crowned Miss Botswana queen, Phirinyane will see her life changing for the better by becoming more involved in community work as well as meeting and empowering young women.

The 25 year-old Phirinyane from Serowe walks away with the title as well as in prize money and sponsorships deals.

“This will be my final year of competing in beauty pageants. What a better way to say goodbye. So many years of competing, fair share of titles, a beautiful journey it has been. It’s all a learning process, you never stop learning, never, and it’s a major lesson, grace and poise. It all starts from within. Energy never lies.

The universe will reciprocate it, it’s your currency. A Queen doesn’t wait for a crown to queen on, it’s a lifetime commitment so always make sure it’s truly who you are and not an act to impress, how long will you keep it up? Stay devoted to the process not the end goal, with devotion comes a result always. As much as it’s a competition, know that people will never forget how you made them feel, there is life after crowning. Be kind, be your true self, enjoy the process, never stop learning, vibrate positive energy and you will never feel you have lost if you do all this.”

This was Phirinyane’s response to a question asked on stage, “If you are given the opportunity to sell SPEDU to international investors what is that you will say to win them?” Perhaps, this was the turning point for a six panel judge to unanimously select Phirinyane as the Miss Botswana 2019/20 queen.

Her articulation to the question symbolized her understanding of the region where they (Miss Botswana contestants) had spent a week on a boot camp to acquaint themselves with the mandate of SPEDU – an organization seeking to revamp the Selebi Phikwe economy, which is still reeling from shock, due to the untimely closure of BCL mine.

In her response, the new queen relayed opportunities to a thunderous applause from a fully packed venue in Selibe Phikwe. The queen is currently enjoying the limelight that comes with her reign.

Excited to be jetting off to London soon for 69th edition of the Miss World pageant, to be held on December 14, 2019 at the ExCeL London in London, United Kingdom, Phirinyane said, “For the longest time I was hesitant to audition for Miss Botswana. When you love what you do you don’t stop because no one is giving you credit, you remember why you started and focus your energy on things that really matter.

Once my gut said it is time, I cancelled all fashion weeks, and focused not only on the end goal but stayed devoted to the process. And I believed I am truly the queen, exactly how our thoughts manifest. For a committed man there is no failure. My goal was to do it once, and do it right. I knew what I was getting myself into, I took years preparing for this,” said Phirinyane.

Furthermore, the new Miss Botswana paid homage to her counterparts for keeping the competition going.

“To the beautiful finalists, you are all phenomenal my queens, this was redirection and a preparation for other bigger things to come.”
