Anchorage, AK - Eight months ago, McKinley Wooten was your average teenager; varsity cheerleader, hyper-involved in extra-curriculars, and spending every minute of free time with her family.
Being a varsity cheerleader wasn’t the only dream she’s made come true. In her first pageant ever, Wooten was crowned Miss Alaska Teen USA. Now while she may make it look easy, Wooten said she’s come a long way.
The past eight months have flipped the Wooten family’s lives upside down from schedule changes, including enrolling McKinley in online classes so she could travel, to learning how to apply makeup for the first time.
While the spotlight may be new to McKinley, it certainly isn’t for her family. Wooten says her Aunt, Sarah Palin, is one of her biggest supporters, encouraging her to do the pageant in the first place and helping her train.
It’s certainly changed Wooten’s image of herself. She says it’s helped her understand not all bodies look the same, and that pageantry isn’t about fitting a mold – it’s about being herself.
