ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The Miss America Competition will no longer take place in Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, according to The Press of Atlantic City. The historic venue hosted the pageant for nearly 80 years.
"It's not going to be in Boardwalk Hall going forward," Casino Reinvestment Development Authority Executive Director Matt Doherty said Wednesday during an editorial board meeting with the Press. "It doesn't make sense for it to be there. It's far too expensive to produce there."
However, Casino Reinvestment Development Authority Executive Director Matt Doherty told the Press he has been working to keep the pageant in Atlantic City. Doherty said he has been working with MAO Executive Chair Gretchen Carlson and CEO Regina Hopper.
Boardwalk Hall hosted the pageant since 1940, with exception of when the competition moved to Las Vegas from 2006-13. The arena has 14,770 seats, according to their website.
Last year, the final night of the Miss America Competition drew 5,880 ticketed spectators, including complimentary tickets, the Press reports.
Miss America was founded in 1921 in Atlantic City. Boardwalk Hall opened in 1929. Boardwalk Hall is owned and funded by the New Jersey CRDA, according to the venue's website.
The announcement comes months after the Miss New Jersey pageant moved out of the Ocean City Music Pier as its host venue. Resorts Casino in Atlantic City announced in January that the Miss New Jersey Pageant would take place at their Atlantic City Venue. The Music Pier hosted the competition for 22 years.
