Miss Botswana 2018 Pageant Slated for Tomorrow

The Miss Botswana 2018 pageant, slated for tommorrow, will go ahead with only 3 confirmed contestants, despite a public outcry. This was revealed in a statement recently by Basadi Masimolole, Team Leader of Miss Botswana restructuring. She said the three Moitshepi Elias, Neelo Nthobatsang and Modioki Gaborone will be battling it out to be the country’s 51st beauty queen.

This is despite an outcry from the public on social media platforms, calling for the organisers to postpone the event, or choose a runner up from the previous pageant, rather than have only 3 contestants competing. Masimolole indicated that they have dropped the description of the 2018 Miss Botswana final pageant event, to 2018 Miss Botswana rebranding, re-launching and crowning even though the judging remains. Masimolole noted that judging will entail the general public voting through sms line this week, the creative industry and past Miss Botswana queen’s representatives at the boot camp, panel of judges at the event as well as attendants through an application.

She stressed that the queens are currently on boot camp prior to the finale.

Despite challenges of putting the 2018 pageantry together, some contestants say this is a platform for self development, and a way of giving back to the community. In an interview with GabzFM news, Miss Botswana contestant Neelo Nthobatsang, said this is an opportunity to grow and learn more about interpersonal skills, amongst others. She further said this affords her a chance to promote agriculture, and eradicate perceptions about farming amongst young people. Nthobatsang noted that it is imperative for Botswana to branch out from being a mineral based economy, to other sectors such as the agriculture sector, as it can help diversify the economy.
