Organisers of the Miss France beauty pageant have said it is open to transgender contestants but conceded that they have no hope of winning.
Sylvie Tellier, chief executive and a former Miss France, said that the rules of the pageant had been modified to let in people who had changed gender.
Her words generated widespread debate in a country where the Miss France pageant remains a hugely popular symbol of traditional values. It is broadcast live every December on TF1, the most watched television channel.
The old rules said that contestants had to be “born a female gender”. The new rules say only that they must present an identity document stating that they are women.
Under French law it is not necessary to undergo surgery…
