“It is a Japanese-based pageant. The finalist will represent South Africa in Japan and out of 118 contestants, I am the only female from an Indian ethnic background representing our community,” she proudly stated.

Miss International contestant, Sasha Naidoo.

Sasha Naidoo is a 23-year-old Phoenix resident, who is competing in the ‘Miss International’ pageant. The young beauty queen has taken a keen interest in defending the rights of those arrested during the unrest in Phoenix. She is currently competing in the Miss International pageant- an event in which she can celebrate her ethnicity.

“It is a Japanese-based pageant. The finalist will represent South Africa in Japan and out of 118 contestants, I am the only female from an Indian ethnic background representing our community,” she proudly stated.

When asked about how she first got into the world of beauty pageants, Naidoo shared, “I did a small pageant in 2016 when attending Damelin and a member from the ‘Miss KZN’ panel spotted me with an offer to enter their pageant, which I won. I was crowned Miss KZN 2016 and Miss KZN’s first princess for 2018. Soon after, brands recognised me. I started modelling for brands, such as Edgars, Queenspark, Poetry. I also modelled at the Vodacom Durban July.”

She also runs an NPO, called Dynasty Women.

“It’s something I started for young women and single mums so that they can. have access to community resources. I also provide self-defence classes. Self-defence is extremely important as I personally went through a traumatic experience. The NPO has been active for six months to date. In terms of projects, I do give back on a charity basis but all funds come from my business, which is known as three dimensional enterprises. I have worked with Avalanche Web in providing seminars for people struggling with anxiety and depression as I am currently studying psychology. I have worked with the Hindu Society in 2018 but most projects are headed by my personal team with a few sponsorships from other businesses. I have also worked closely with animal shelters and children homes,” explained Naidoo.

She continued, “With regards to those, who were arrested during the unrest, my fight started because of the human rights issue involved. Their condition inside prison is poor even though awaiting trial members are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. I did voice myself at a recent political rally and that’s how my recognition started. That’s why my fight for justice began. I can relate to so many people and it’s not something I decided to do for clout. We lost loved ones and I just decided to use my platform to reach a larger spectrum.”

She explained that during the unrest, a relative was protecting the community and took a night watch.

“During this time, he, along with other men in the community, protected our homes. Suddenly, a vehicle drove by and opened fire. He was shot dead. The police blamed him for his own death and said that he probably provoked the shooters, which was far from the truth. A business was under attack during the unrest as well. Once the owner arrived at the scene, he saw that the community took defensive actions. He took a video and circulated it. As a result, he is awaiting trial for over 90 days. His bail hearing was postponed five times already. He shared a cell with Jeetendra Jaikissoon, who died while in policy custody,” she concluded.
