Miss Namibia, Miss Teen Namibia to be crowned

IT is pageant season again, as tonight Miss Teen Namibia will crown a new young beauty queen, replacing the reigning Alexis Swart and beginning her year of duty, in NBC's first live show since the pandemic brought events to a standstill in 2020.

Tomorrow night (13 August) will be the official Miss Namibia pageant during which Chelsi Shikongo, who was crowned during a virtual pageant, will hand her crown over to the winner who will go on to represent the country at the global Miss Universe showcase in the Philippines later this year.

According to pageant director Umbi Karuiahe-Upi, Miss Namibia not only gives young women the platform to grow individually and create socially responsible causes for the greater good, but also highlights what Namibia as a country has to offer the world.

“It showcases Namibia on international platforms, promotes tourism and also interest in this Sub-Saharan country,” she said of the live show, which will be hosted by actor and media personality Adriano Visagie andformer Miss Namibia and Miss Universe Michelle McLean, with musical performances by KP Illest and Adora Kisting.

The Miss Namibia crowning ceremony judges include Gerine Hoff, designer McBright Kavari, medical practitioner and public speaker Esperance Luvindao, Coca Cola's Maguire Mulder and UNICEF's Helena Kandjumbwa.

Miss Teen Namibia will be judged by Andeline Wieland, Ilke Platt, Beaulah Boois-Beukes and former Miss Namibia Nadja Breytenbach.

Last year, Shikongo walked away with the crown as well as a cash prize, a vehicle to use for a year, accommodation at the Windhoek Country Club and Resort, make-up, hair and beauty services for a year, a cellphone from MTC, sunglasses and other items.

Boois-Beukes, who is also NBC's corporate communications officer, added that this year the Miss Namibia beauty pageant prize package has improved tremendously.

“There are major upgrades in prizes to be won,” she said.

Both pageants will take place at the Windhoek Country Club and Resort from 19h00 with tickets available online via webtickets.com.na. General access will cost N$250 or N$450, while VIP tickets are going for N$650. The action will be beamed live on NBC.
