Miss New Jersey and team volunteer at Community FoodBank

Team Miss New Jersey, lead by Miss Jersey 2017 Kaitlyn Schoeffel, helped collect nearly 1,100 lbs of donations and packaged 300 bags of food for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey Southern Branch during Miss America Serves Day 2018. (Saturday April 7, 2018)

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — As a part of the Miss America Serves Day, Miss New Jersey 2017 Kaitlyn Schoeffel and 25 local pageant titleholders packed 300 bags of food for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, on Saturday morning.

Working in an assembly line, the women packed grocery bags with canned, boxed and quick-prep meals for the Community FoodBank's Motel Mobile Project. According to the Community FoodBank, the bags are a part of a weekly delivery to Atlantic County residents in need, living in motels along the Black Horse and White Horse pikes.

This is the fourth year for the Miss America Serves campaign, which, according to the Miss America Organization, is a national effort to encourage participants and leaders in the Miss America program to give back to their communities.

"I challenged each and every contestant who will be competing at Miss New Jersey this year to host their own individual food drives and whatever they collected, they brought here" said Schoeffel. In total, team Miss New Jersey donated almost 1,100 lbs of food to the Community FoodBank.

"I literally could not be more proud of my fellow sisters," said Schoeffel.

Team Miss New Jersey started the morning at the recently opened Egg Harbor Township Chick-Fil-A restaurant, serving breakfast at the drive-thru window and collecting donations for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the Miss America Organization's charity partner.

This weekend also kicks off orientation for the Miss New Jersey pageant. 28 local titleholders will complete for the Miss New Jersey 2018 crown in Ocean City this June.
