Miss World 2019 says beauty pageants still have value


The latest winner of the Miss World, Jamaica's Toni-Ann Singh, says she wants to use her award to work for sustainable change for women.


Miss Nigeria's excitement about her friend winning the Miss World crown is making headlines around the world as a show of true friendship.


Miss Nigeria, Nyekachi Douglas, Miss Jamaica, Toni-Ann Singh, and Miss Brazil, Elis Coelho, were all waiting patiently on stage to find out who would be crowned Miss World at the event, which was held in London on Sunday Morning, New Zealand time.


When Miss Jamaica's name was announced as the winner, Douglas didn't hesitate, launching into an excited happy dance for her friend. She then shouted her congratulations and gave everyone a big hug.

Her reaction has been shared on social media as an example of how friends should support each other.


"Miss Nigeria's reaction to Miss Jamaica winning #MissWorld2019 is the only energy I'm accepting around me!" Amanda Morris wrote on Twitter.


"In 2020 when your friend starts a new business, podcast, therapy, anything that enhances their life. Be her Miss Nigeria," Marianne Sunshine said.


In an video after the competition, Douglas said Singh was "amazing" throughout the competition.


"A lot of times in this kind of competition, there's a lot of times I thought ... this is really too much for me," Douglas said.


"She was the one that would be like, 'Listen, you've got this'."


Singh, who was born in Jamaica and now lives in Florida, US, beat runner-up Ophély Mézino of France, and second runner-up Suman Rao of India to claim the title. Douglas finished in the top five, along with Miss Brazil Elis Coelho. Miss New Zealand, Lucy Brock, was also at the event, among contestants from 130 countries.
