Tamaryn Green, who interrupted her medical studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT) when she was crowned Miss South Africa last year, is returning to university.

Tamaryn (24), who was in her final year when she became Miss SA in May 2018, says she’s excited about completing her medical degree.

She recently posted pics of her dressed in scrubs on Instagram. “Haven’t been in these for a while. Looking forward to stepping back into theatre,” she captioned it.

In another pic she’s assisting with an operation.

Did the patient know Miss SA would be in the operating theatre?

“We told the patient I’m a final-year medical student but she didn’t know I’m Miss South Africa,” Tamaryn tells YOU.

“We did ask permission for me to assist and she was comfortable with that,” she adds.

“I’m officially returning to my studies on 1 April.”

Tamaryn, who’s from Paarl in the Boland, had been living in the university residence until just before she was crowned Miss SA. “I liked going home at the weekend to watch movies and eat my mom’s delicious Sunday lunch,” she’s previously said.

Tamaryn wants to specialise in paediatrics. “I love children,” she says.

It’s hardly surprising as both her parents are educators. Dad David (60) is a curriculum adviser and mom Ellirene (53) is a teacher.

She recently returned from a weekend at Sun City with her parents, sister Lauren (26) and brother Dawson (20).

She shared several pics of their “mini holiday” with her 300 000 Instagram followers.

“Had an amazing weekend catching up with my siblings. With us working/studying in different provinces we hardly have time together. Making time for my family is a priority. Wishing them a blessed next few months. Until we see each other again,” she captioned a pic of her, her brother and sister.

Tamaryn, who was crowned runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant in December, isn’t the only Miss SA who’s studied medicine.

Adè van Heerden (27), who was Miss SA when Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (23) was crowned Miss Universe in November 2017, is a qualified doctor.

Rolene Strauss (26) was also a medical student – at the University of the Free State – when she became Miss SA. After completing her reign as Miss World in 2014, Rolene returned to university to finish her studies.

Rolene had been one of Tamaryn’s inspirations for entering the Miss SA competition. “I’d wanted to complete my studies first but then she proved one can do both,” Tamaryn says.
