The newly crowned Miss SA, Lalela Mswane, has been forbidden from entering Israel to compete in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant this December.

Israel has banned all travel from the country due to the detection of a new COVID-19 variant called Omicron.

Miss SA Lalela Mswane trended on Twitter recently when it was announced that Israel banned travel to and from South Africa following the news of a new COVID-19 variant in the country on Thursday 25 November.

Israeli’s prime minister, Naftali Bennett banned the entry of foreigners from seven African countries and travel to them.

Israel made the announcement after the United Kingdom banned flights from Southern African countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini and Zimbabwe.

“@UKHSA is investigating a new variant. More data is needed but we’re taking precautions now. From noon tomorrow six African countries will be added to the red list, flights will be temporarily banned, and UK travellers must quarantine,” wrote health secretary Sajid Javid on Twitter.

South Africans celebrated the news from Israel as they’ve been against Lalela entering the pageant due to the “apartheid status” on Israel.

Miss Namibia, Chelsi Shikongo, will also not be able to compete in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant at the Israeli coastal resort Eilat on 12 December.

Israel, like South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana, has recorded the new B1.1.529 variant.

The Southern African nations, except those in North Africa, were added to Israel’s “red list” of high-risk countries.

The reigning Miss Namibia was set to leave for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant tomorrow.

Miss Namibia co-director, Umbi Karuaihe-Upi, told the media that the organisation is aware of the matter but is unable to tell the public if Shikongo will go to Israel or not.

“We are still in contact with the Miss Universe organisation. Once we have the full information, we will share it with the public. All I know for now is that Chelsi is still expected to travel to Israel on Sunday.”
