Recently Miss Senegal 2020 Ndeye Fatima Dione openly revealed to the media that she was drugged and raped during a party thrown by the national pageant organizers. As a result of the assault, she became pregnant and later stopped receiving invites for Miss Senegal events.
And even though top executives of the Miss Senegal beauty pageant dismissed the accusations made by Ndeye, it kindled intense debate across the West African country. While the Miss Senegal organizing committee chairwoman, Amina Badiane, received an opportunity to explain the situation during an interview, she couldn't have done worse.
Amina went on to say that Ndeye provoked her own sexual assault. "Rape is between two people, isn't it? It's not just about one individual. So if she was raped, she must file a complaint. And if she was raped, it's because she asked for it. After all, she is an adult," she stated.
Soon, social media was flooded with the hashtags #JusticeforFatima. A petition was also rolled out demanding the immediate withdrawal of the operating license of the current committee and its dissolution. Within three days, it accumulated more than 50,000 signatures. While CFAO Motors Senegal announced terminating their partnership with the committee, activists have called on other sponsors to be held accountable, including the Ministries of Culture and Health.
