Newly crowned Miss Teen USA 2020 Ki’ilani Arruda has expressed her admiration for Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.
“I’m a little biased. Of course, Catriona because I am half Filipino myself and her reign was so amazing, and I’ve always looked up to her as a role model,” Arruda was quoted as saying to entertainment portal Pep.ph.
During the Question and Answer portion, Arruda was asked what has experiencing a global pandemic taught her about life. She answered: “Well, of course this global pandemic is very unprecedented and has taught me a lot about life. For me, it has especially taught me how to appreciate my family. I got to spend so much time with my family, my little sister, my little brother. I love them dearly, and I know that soon, in spring, I will be going into college, and I won’t have those precious moments to share with them. So really, it’s just to cherish those moments. And it’s so honorable I get to represent my home of Hawai’i, so just being at home is so wonderful.”
Well, this is not the first time that a Pinay descendant snatched an award in the said pageant. Arruda is following in the footsteps of Vanessa Minillo-Lachey, who in 1998 was declared as the first Fil-Am to win the title.
During the preliminaries, Arruda was introduced as the 18-year-old high school student whose future plans include majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology, then attending Medical School at Stanford.
They shared that the latter was executive student body president while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
The “future dermatologist” is passionate about painting, and once attended space camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, while for the National Honor Society service project Arruda hosted a beach clean-up.
