Born on November 14, 1996, Rabiya has an Indian-American father and a Filipino mother. Her parents separated, and Rabiya was left to the care of her mother.

In an Instagram post, Rabiya shared an open letter to her estranged father, saying “I became a strong independent woman today because of the situation that happened in the past but I never blamed you for it.”

2. She struggled financially while growing up

In a video posted by GMA Network, Rabiya admitted that she grew up in poverty and graduating college was the ultimate achievement and gift she could give her mom. Her mom is the one who solely supported their family.

3. Before Miss Universe, she’s a licensed physical therapist and educator
Before taking the path to the pageant scene, Rabiya passed the physical therapist licensure. She also graduated with flying colors as a cum laude at the Iloilo Doctors’ College and passed the board exam in August of 2018. She then went on to work at a review center to help who planned to take the same board exam.

4. Her signature walk is called the Hala Bira
If Catriona Gray has the Lava Walk, Rabiya has Hara Bira walk. “Hala Bira” comes from the Iloilo festival song of the same name.

5. Rabiya’s trip to America for Miss Universe was her first international flight
Since she reportedly grew up in poverty, Rabiya only experienced her first international flight at the age of 24 for the Miss Universe Pageant. But we’re sure there will be more miles to go for this queen!

6. Rabiya Mateo accidentally falls into swimming pool during Miss Universe shoot
But she handled it like a true queen. In a video posted by Rabiya’s training camp Aces & Queens, the 24-year-old beauty queen recalled the unexpected events that happened to her that day: “So a lot of things happened. First of all, I accidentally fell [in] the pool, so I got half of my outfit wet. And then I almost lost my diamonds.” Rabiya just laughed it off and took to Instagram saying that “When life puts you in a bad situation, just make a joke out of it.”

The Four Filipina Miss Universe

Get to know the empowering Filipina Queens who slayed the runway in the Miss Universe Pageant.

1. Gloria Diaz, 1969
The first Filipina to bring home the title was Gloria Diaz. She won the title at the age of 18. She was a business student at St. Scholastica College who was simply scouted to join Binibining Pilipinas a month earlier, and had no training but her raw morena beauty, and quick and witty answers and counter-questions to the host, Bob Barker made her a crowd favorite. Besides the title of Miss Universe, Diaz was also in the Top 10 Best in Swimsuit awardees.

Question: In a next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?

Winning Answer: Oh, just the same things I do. I think if he has been in the moon for so long I think when he comes over he wants to change, I guess.

2. Margie Moran-floirendo, 1973
Four years after Gloria Diaz gave the Philippines its first Miss Universe crown, 18-year-old Maryknoll College (now Miriam College) student Margie Moran bagged it again. Before joining the pageant scene, Moran was a part-time model for renowned fashion designer Auggie Cordero and danced in The Best of Broadway production by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Eventually after her Miss Universe stint, she became the president of Ballet Philippines and now the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of CCP.

Her height, natural beauty, and confidence in her clothes were huge factors to her win.

Question: Let’s make believe that all of a sudden you had a million dollars. What’s the first thing you would buy and why would you buy it?

Winning Answer: A house and lot because it’s the most expensive thing and I can’t afford it. If I had a million bucks, I’ll buy a house and lot and live by myself and other people of course.

3. Pia Wurtzbach, 2015
It was Pia Wurtzbach who ended the Philippines’ 42-year drought with her iconic fierce look on the camera with a quick switch to angelic smile. Wurtzbach’s win was historic and really became a hot topic due to various controversies especially when host Steve Harvey made the wrong announcement.

This beauty queen is an inspiration for many Filipinos because she proved that you can get what you want if you have the courage and perseverance to do it. She attempted to win Binibining Pilipinas thrice! But before becoming Miss Universe, she was an actress, a stylist, and a beauty writer.

Question: Earlier this year, there was a controversy in the Philippines about the United States reopening a base in your country. Do you think the United States should have a military presence in your country?

Winning Answer: I think that the United States and the Philippines have always had a good relationship with each other. We were colonized by the Americans and we have their culture and our traditions even up to this day and I think that we’re very welcoming with the Americans. And I don’t see any problem with that at all.

Final three
Standard question: Why should you be the next Miss Universe?

Winning Answer: To be a Miss Universe is both an honor and responsibility. If I were to be Miss Universe, I will use my voice to influence the youth and I would raise awareness to certain causes like HIV awareness that is timely and relevant to my country, which is the Philippines. I want to show the world, the universe rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart. Thank you.

4. Catriona Gray, 2018
Catriona Gray, the Philippines’ fourth Filipina Miss Universe, definitely changed the game once again with her win. She is indeed the epitome of beauty, brains, and heart. Throughout the pageant, she wore pieces that showcase Filipino culture, she was true to her word when she said that she will bring the whole Philippines to the competition.

Before her stint in the Binibining Pilipinas, the Filipina-Australian beauty was also a TV host, singer, model, and stage actress. Talk abou talent! What can’t she do?

She was one of the most notable Filipia Beauty Queens because she didn’t just win the Miss Universe title but also the Miss World Philippines in 2016, placed in the Top 5 and won Multimedia Award and placed second in the talent competition.

Question: Canada recently joined Uruguay as the second nation in the world to make marijuana legal. What is your opinion on the regularization of marijuana?

Winning Answer: I’m for it being used for medical use, but not so for recreational use. Because I think if people will argue then what about alcohol and cigarettes? Everything is good but in moderation.

Final three
Standard Question: What is the most important lesson you’ve learned and how will you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?

Winning Answer: I work a lot in the slums of Tondo, Manila and the life there is poor and very sad. And I’ve always taught to myself to look for the beauty of it and look at the beauty of the faces of the children and to be grateful. And I will bring this aspect as a Miss Universe to see situations with a silver lining and to assess where I could give something, where I could provide something as a spokesperson. And this I think if I can teach people to be grateful, we can have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster and children will have smile on their faces.
