Since 1952, Miss Universe has celebrated the beauty of the female form, claiming to be a source of empowerment and instilling values of confidence in women across the globe. In recent years, the pageant has received numerous sources of backlash, claiming the organization is “antiquated and out of style,” especially from proponents of the feminist movement. Fans of the competition argue that Miss Universe provides a platform for women to promote causes that matter to them while gaining exposure to new and exciting opportunities across the globe.

In a traditional sense, the Miss Universe contestants represent what is supposed to be considered the ideal standard of beauty. While each of the women competing each year is diverse in so many ways, the common thread that binds the contestants is their undeniable physical beauty. In recent years, the pageant has made a valiant effort to look at the contestant as a whole. Education, accomplishments, passion, and articulation are values that have been fortified within the Miss Universe system throughout the last couple of years.

When discussing makeup trends in pageantry, famed hair and makeup artist, Autumn Hartt, shared her thoughts on the evolution of pageant beauty trends. 

“Over the years, there has been a shift in the hair and makeup trends at an international level. We have transitioned from “stage makeup” to flamboyant, dark colours. In the last 10 years, the transition of makeup has become far more natural and could easily be worn as an everyday glam look. We have transitioned from big hair, big lashes and bright lips to a more natural glamour, and only time will tell what trends will come next in the pageant scene.”

This year’s Miss Universe pageant truly embodied what it means to be confidently beautiful, celebrating a diverse group of women. From hair to makeup, these women have ushered in a new era of beauty queens, setting trends for the countless women who watch them parade on stage from home.
