Reigning Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa, former Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere, and other candidates from other countries will visit the Philippines from December 6 to 10, the Department of Tourism (DOT) confirmed yesterday.
“The winner, Ms. South Africa is coming over together with some other candidates, as of now 14 pa lang, but we’re waiting for Thailand to confirm, so ‘yun pa lang,” Tourism Wanda Teo said in a press conference in Makati City Monday.
Teo said the trip is aimed at further boosting the country’s tourism industry.
Nel-Peters and Mittenaere will be joined by Miss Universer candidates from India, USA, Singapore, Rusia, Netherlands, South Korea, China, Italy, United Kingdom, Malaysia and Miss Universe-Philippines Rachel Peters.
On December 6, the ladies will tour Rizal Park and Intramuros and will grace the DOT’s Christmas party the following day.
On December 8, the girls will be grouped into three to visit three provinces.
Nel-Peters along with Miss India, USA, Singapore, and Thailand will go to Batanes.
Mittenaere, Miss Russia, Netherlands, Korea and Canada will fly to Bohol while Peters and candidates from China, Italy, UK, and Malaysia will visit Camiguin.
They will also attend a gala and awards night for women on Dec. 9. They will fly back to their respective countries on Dec. 10.
The most significant take away of the Philippines in this event, Teo said, is being able to create tourism ambassadors for the country.
“Promotion, because they’re Philppine ambassadors and when they go back to their country, they will be tourism ambassadors, and they have a lot of following on their social media accounts,” Teo said.
