VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - Miss Universe Laos 2018, On-anong Homsombath, is immensely proud after her amazing Lao-style outfit won the National Costume Competition at the Miss Universe 2018 pageant in Thailand this month.
Since the win, she has thanked local folk for their continuing support that enabled her to receive the award for Laos.
Lao Youth Radio recently invited her to give her impressions on winning the Best National Costume Award and other highlights of the competition.
She has also shown her appreciation via Facebook about the award and her time after being crowned Miss Universe Laos and then promoting Laos and its culture on an international stage.
She was excited to be Laos’ representative at Miss Universe 2018 and take part in its many activities as one of 93 contestants from around the world.
Her remarkable golden outfit certainly caught everyone’s attention and shone a light on Lao culture.
The winning national costume was created by Thai artist Mr Khamphee Arangkarn with its design inspired by the tireless efforts to help people affected by the floods in Attapeu province in July.
The costume depicts a Kinnaly, a half human, half bird figure which features in a Lao folktale. The Kinnaly’s appearance on stage was meant to thank all people, both in and outside of Laos, for their donations to help the flood victims.
The golden outfit consisted of three linked Kinnaly costumes. It weighed 40 kilograms and cost more than 30 million kip and took several months to create.
Given its substantial weight, it’s no surprise that On-anong had to be both strong and patient as she manoeuvred the golden costume around the stage.
On-anong recently expressed her gratitude on social media.
“I am thankful for every opportunity and challenge that has shaped me into who I am. I enjoyed every single moment of the Miss Universe Pageant 2018. Years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined or pictured myself in a beauty pageant, walking on an international stage, having my country sash across my shoulder and living the moment to proudly represent my country and who I am. I was shy and introverted as a child, but I learned to overcome these insecurities as I started to connect to many people during my life journey.”
“I learned to embrace all imperfections, go for everything that my heart sets me to and challenge myself for better change. Living a life that I seek out to fulfil my passion and value every outcome. I believe that if we take every step in life as experiences, stay optimistic and empowered, we can be the happiest person on earth. Lastly, thank you for a pretty and elegant gown from Nguyen Minh Tuan. I really enjoyed walking in this dress,” she said.
For the Best National Costume award, she thanked Dr Hongkham Souvannavong for the trust and opportunity given to her in being Lao cultural ambassador during the competition.
She thanked Mr Khamphee Arangkarn for the wonderful and eye-catching outfit that won the National Costume competition along with Mr Ar and Ms Fone from Saykeo Makeup as well Mr Ponsinh Boutkaska for his advice and assistance during the pageant.
She also thanked Miss Laos Company Limited for paying for her trip to Thailand and especially her family and friends for their unwavering support.
“It was an amazing evening on the night of the national costume competition, when I got to walk in the Lao national costume for the Miss Universe National Costume Competition. I had so much fun and felt so proud carrying this token of my country’s pride in such an international arena as the Miss Universe pageant. For me, all of these wonderful experiences could not have happened without the help and support of the Lao people, the costume designer, and all the lovely supervisors and admin team in Thailand and around the world who are working hard backstage on the night to bring joy to all of us. Sending my big thanks and appreciation to all of them,” she said.
