Pageant fans in New York cheered on Miss Universe Catriona Gray who made her back-to back debut appearances in two popular American morning programs last Monday.

Gray kicked off with a brief appearance on “Good Morning America.” Then she went to another morning program “Live With Kelly and Ryan” for its first live show for 2019. Both programs are located at ABC Studios in the Upper West Side. For the day, she completed six interviews.

For “Good Morning,” the Filipino-Australian beauty queen talked about her advocacy which is education for children and her passion for music. In “Live,” Gray sat with hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest for about five minutes.

Garbed in yellow dress, Ripa and Seacrest greeted Gray happy birthday and congratulated her for winning the title as she made her way to the stage of the show. Gray just turned 25 last Jan. 6.

When asked how she celebrated her birthday in New York, Gray said: “I thought I’m gonna have a celebration the whole week! I saw Broadway, I had a bit of a food trip, I went to Hillsong. It was amazing!”

Gray then traced her family roots. “My mom is a Filipino (Normita Magnayon) and my dad (Ian Gray) is a Scottish immigrant to Australia. I was born and raised in Australia then I moved to the Philippines as a teenager.”

Concerned, Ripa asked Gray her thoughts on winter season in New York. “I have a coat and I have been going out at least a minimal of three layers. So I’m looking like a bit of a siopao (steamed bun) and when I go out, I am really-fluffy looking. But as long as I am warm, I’m good.”

Gray continued how she loves the weather in New York. “I love it! I grew up in a one-climate kind of setting in the Philippines and where I grew up in Australia. So it’s summer and wet season.”

The beauty queen drew loud applause from fans, apparently Filipinos, who were seated in the balcony of the morning show when she mentioned about Mayon Volcano as the source of inspiration for her acclaimed red evening gown created by Mak Tumang for the 2018 Miss Universe finals in Bangkok, Thailand last Dec. 17.

“Filipino fans are the best fans in the world, and this whole journey has been amazing,” Gray said.

She also discussed her affiliation with Young Focus, the children’s education group in Tondo, Manila.

“I really believe that education is transformative. It’s something that you can give to a child or to a person that can never be taken away from them, which is why I’m so passionate about it,” she explained.

Gray added: “These kids, without NGOs like that, might not ever experience going to school, experience developing a love for learning, which, at the end of the day, is really what can pull out a family out of poverty.”
