New candidate Kristeen Mae Boccang will be taking Evangeline Fuentes' place.
The Miss Universe Philippines 2023 pageant hasn't even started yet, but there are already shifts happening - such as a new candidate being introduced after the departure of one.
In a post on the official Miss Universe Philippines Instagram account, the organization revealed that Kristeen Mae Boccang will be the latest candidate taking part in the pageant, after Evangeline Fuentes withdrew from the competition due to health concerns. According to the organization, Kristeen will be representing the province of Apayao.
Kristeen will now be competing alongside 39 other candidates for a chance to win either the “La Mer en Majeste” crown or the two new crowns that the Miss Universe Philippines teased at the beginning of the month. In the caption to their Instagram post about the reveal, the organization said that there are now “three prestigious crowns at stake” and that “three exceptional women” will “dazzle the universe on the global stage.”
Kristeen becoming a part of the project comes after the Miss Universe Philippines extended applications for the pageant twice - first to February 5 and then to February 14. The organization also opened on-site applications until the 17th.
The current reigning Miss Universe Philippines 2022 is Celeste Cortesi, who recently had a conversation with Boy Abunda emphasizing that she did everything she could for the country.
“Sobrang hirap para sa akin pero I have my family there so I was okay and of course I went through a very difficult time the weeks to follow but I know in my heart that the respect, the love and support that I gained from the Filipino fans is really more valuable than the Miss Universe crown, and I really really know that ginawa ko ang lahat para sa bansa,” she said.
Before the interview with Boy Abunda, Celeste spent her time at the Burgos Reef Boutique Resort in Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte. In the caption to one of her posts, Celeste described the location as “a little paradise.”
