Calls for our Miss Universe to come home have finally been heard. The 26-year-old posted a video of herself announcing her tour dates on Instagram and Twitter.

Based in New York, Tunzi has not returned to South Africa since she was crowned in Atlanta in December 2019. Instead, she has been embarking on her pageant duties, attending high-profile events, giving interviews, as well as a trip to Indonesia.

Tunzi excited to finally ‘feel SA support in person’
“The support of my fellow South Africans has been echoing throughout the entire universe since the day that I won. I am so excited to finally get to feel it in person.

“The homecoming tour will be taking place from 8 to 15 February. I am hoping you can do me the honour of coming to welcome the @mouawad crown home. See you there,” she said.

Crown of glittering glory

The public relations graduate’s crown is reportedly worth R73 million. Named the “Power of Unity” crown, it was created by Fred Mouwad and features 1 770 diamonds set in 18-karat gold.

Mouwad says the interconnected vines on the crown “represent the community of women from around the world whose bonds unite them and reminds us we are stronger together than apart”.

Tunzi: Time for women to take up space
Tunzi has already begun to add her voice to gender equality and women leadership. During the Miss Universe competition, she was unequivocal in her stance that the time was now for women to take up space.

“The most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time, not because we don’t want to [lead], but because of what society has labelled women to be,” she said.

On Twitter, she was fiery in her response to a follower who said: “Those who think we are equal, I am telling you now you will never see the ‘Door of Marriage’.”

To which Tunzi responded that women are fine with seeing doors of leadership positions.

“I can assure you now though that we will be seeing doors of positions of leadership. Not only that but we will be kicking them down one by one by all means necessary. You see, it is not your permission we seek to ignite our fire. Thank you though for engaging,” she wrote.

She added women should not have to dim their light for anything.

What I’m saying here is that don’t threaten women with marriage when they become ambitious and want to be great. In fact don’t threaten women into dimming their light for anything. https://twitter.com/mangi_tshikomba/status/1222460209324613633 …
