Miss World Cayman Islands Leaves for Competition

At 5am on Tuesday morning while most of us were asleep, the members of the Miss World Cayman Islands committee were busy, and so was Kristin Amaya. Miss Amaya was about to leave Cayman for New York to complete the final leg of preparation for the Miss World pageant. After all, she is the current Miss World Cayman Islands.

In order to avoid any confusion, some background is necessary. As I am sure most people know, there are two major global pageants; Miss Universe and Miss World. Each competition includes representatives from countries around the world, who have been selected by the franchise holders in those countries. Up until less than a year ago, the Cayman Islands Government held the franchises for both global pageants. After the Miss World pageant franchise was given up by CIG, another entity in the Cayman Islands stepped in to fill the void.

Ms. Pamela Small began negotiations to acquire the franchise for the Cayman Islands. After much effort, a deal was reached and now Cayman will have a representative at this year’s Miss World in Sanya, China. Since the final acquisition happened so close to the pageant, the local committee was given an exception so that a representative could be chosen this year without a local pageant. The committee sought, and gained, approval from the CIG to send the 1st Runner-up from this year’s Miss Cayman Islands Pageant. Thus, Miss Kristin Amaya was selected.

The events that have occurred over the past few weeks are quite spectacular. Miss Small is still very excited and had much to say. She stated, “I’ve always dreamed of having my own local pageant and I’m overjoyed that it’s now a reality. I think the Miss World pageant is a very important one and I will strive to send the best representative possible each year, to represent our beautiful country. “ Of course, these ventures all take financial support and Ms. Small added, “I am extremely grateful for the amount of sponsorship so far as without it we would not have been able to send Kristin to Miss World.” Support has come from dozens of sponsors such as Burger King, JN Cayman, Arch and Godfrey, K Rose, Isy B, Sarra (Mac Makeup), Beyond Basics (for skincare), Rock Gorgeous ( for hair), The Finishing Touch (for accessories), Kings sports Centre, 7 Seas Charters, and Etc.

In addition to the financial side, Ms. Small confirmed that a good committee is an invaluable and necessary asset. When asked about her committee, she proudly said, “The committee members include Anna Clarke, Pearlina McGaw-Lumsden, Nicosia Lawson, Theresa Cole, April General, and Cedric Gidarisingh.

For now, and during the entire Miss World Pageant process, the lady under the spotlight is Kristin Amaya. With only 3 weeks of intense and spirited preparation so far, Miss Amaya is undoubtedly full of many emotions. When she was asked how things have been for her during this time, she responded very proudly, “It has been a crazy but exciting time.” She continued, “I am very happy to be representing our country.”

Since she will serve as the country’s premier ambassador during this time, Miss Amaya will need to fulfill an important role. However, with her genuine personality, poise, and beauty, along with the guidance and support of the committee, Cayman can rest assured that it will be well represented.
