New Miss Delaware crowned during Friday night event in Milton

There's a new Miss Delaware.

During a Friday night competition at the Milton Theater, Sophie Phillips, a 25-year-old Bear resident, was crowned the new Miss Delaware.

Phillips moves on to the 100th Miss America competition, which is in December at the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Phillips, a University of Delaware graduate, was previously a Miss Southern Delaware winner. She's an avid bicyclist who is studying for a master's degree in energy and environmental policy. Phillips also plays the piano.

The Miss Delaware Scholarship Organization is a not-for-profit organization that serves as the official state preliminary for the Miss America competition. The 2020 Miss America competition was canceled due to the coronavirus. So, too, was the Miss Delaware competition.

Phillips, who was Miss Milford, won $10,000 at Friday night's contest. Here were the runners-up:

1st: Riley Slate, Miss Brandywine ($3,000)
2nd: Imani Cummings, Miss Capital ($2,500)
3rd: Allison Dayton, Miss First State ($2,000)
4th: Kara Scarangella, Miss Blue-Gold ($1,500)
The Delaware Miss USA pageant, which feeds into the Miss USA competition, is Sunday evening.
