Just one day after the 2018 Miss Universe preliminary competition held in Bangkok, Thailand last Thursday, Miss Philippines Catriona Gray and Miss Puerto Rico Kiara Ortega emerged as the favorite candidates to win the crown.

This was based on several betting sites which showed Gray and Ortega tied for No. 1 among online bettors around the world. Behind them are Miss Thailand Sophida Kanchanarin, Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers, Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green, Miss Spain Angela Ponce; and Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez.
“While Ponce’s odds offer very good value, the betting favorites remain Miss Philippines (+500), Miss Puerto Rico (+500), Miss Thailand (+800) and Miss USA (+800),” says OddsShark, one of the online betting sites.
It adds: “Betting on the Miss Universe pageant is not new, but there has been an intense interest in this year’s event due to Ponce breaking new ground. It also appears that bettors are backing Ponce not only to compete but to win.”
”Miss Spain opened with +5000 betting odds at online shop Bovada but betting action has moved her odds all the way to +1000. In other words, from a 50-to-1 longshot to 10 to 1. These are better odds than other contenders Miss Brazil, Miss Ecuador and Miss Vietnam at +1500,” the same betting site reported.
In Las Vegas Sports Betting and Vegas-Sports Betting sites, both Gray and Ortega also tied for the No. 1 spot.
USA remains to be the country with the most number of Miss Universe titles with 8; followed by Venezuela, 7; Puerto Rico, 5; and Philippines and Sweden, 3.
Ninety-four contestants are competing in this year’s Miss Universe beauty pageant in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday, Dec. 17.
