Miss Philippines Nicole Borromeo finished as third runner-up in the Miss International 2023 pageant held at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan last October 26.

Andrea Rubio of Venezuela was crowned as the Miss International 2023 title holder by Germany’s Jasmin Selberg after besting 69 other candidates.

Other runner-ups included Sofia Osio Luna of Colombia as first runner-up; Camila Diaz Daneri of Peru as second runner-up, and Vanessa Hayes Schutt of Bolivia as fourth runner-up.

The Top 7 finalists came from Colombia, Venezuela, Philippines, Mexico, Thailand, Bolivia, and Peru.

Nicole wore a glamorous “Majestic Magindara” evening gown by Dubai-based Filipino designer Furne Amato.

The gown was inspired by the Filipino mythical creature Magindara or Bantay Tubig, a Visayan counterpart of sirens.

As explained in the post by Binibining Pilipinas on Instagram, the gown embodies “both the maiden allure, and fierce feminine rage” of the mythical creature as well as the details where it “mimics the bioluminescence of aquatic life, mesmerizing and mysterious.”

The dreamy gown was a “mix of mesh net crystals, and Egyptian stones” that added “texture and dimension to the overall composition, and the translucent fringe finish” which “creates the illusion of fins.”

Nicole’s national costume was also inspired by the beauty of the deep sea. She previously wore a sea urchin-inspired dress, a unique and quirky design created by the Cebuano fashion designer Axel Que.

For the question and answer portion, Nicole as was asked, "The Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs by the United Nations have targets that are set to be achieved by 2030. What have you done so far in terms of SDG initiatives?"

The Pinay beauty queen answered, "As someone who experienced the wrath of natural disasters, home is everything. I've worked tirelessly with Habitat for Humanity and the SDG's goal number 1 of sustainable cities and communities."

"It is through this volunteer work that I could see in the faces of the children how much they wanted to help, how much they wanted to be a part of the future. Because when it comes to sustainability, we must keep in mind that it is not only for the next generation, but to include them in the process," she added.

The Philippines last took home the Miss International crown in 2016 with Kylie Verzosa. Nicole’s predecessor, Hannah Arnold, finished in the Top 15 last year.
