Scottish heritage that makes the new Miss Universe a real beauty queen

SCOTLAND can lay claim to creating the newly crowned most beautiful woman in the universe.

Catriona Gray has just been awarded the 2018 title and she doesn’t just boast a Scottish-sounding name – her father is from Fraserburgh. The 24-year-old beauty queen is officially an Australian-Filipina, but her dad is originally from the Aberdeenshire fishing town, where lads and lassies are better known as loons and quines.

The Queensland-born beauty, who works as a TV host, is the daughter of Ian Gray, whose family emigrated to Australia in 1952.

Named in honour of her Scottish grandmother Catherine, she entered the beauty contest representing the Philippines, where she lives.

The 5ft 10in model’s mum, Normita, is a native of the south east Asian country, and Catriona said volunteering in the slums of capital Manila had taught her to be grateful.

The Miss Universe 2018 finals ceremony took place in Thailand on Sunday night.

Millions of viewers tuned in to see Catriona take this year’s title, beating more than 90 other contestants.

In the “national dress” round she wowed the judges in a fiery red-hot outfit symbolising the Philippines’ Mayon Volcano.
