Miss Universe Singapore is calling on Singaporean women to run for this year’s crown.

Organizers of the annual beauty pageant announced today that they were accepting applications in its hunt for the successor of its current title holder Bernadette Belle Ong. The virtual competition in September is also set to showcase art and fashion through films produced by local artists.

The competition said in a statement today that they were looking for “empowered Singaporean” women who are “diverse and inclusive in her perspective, sophisticated, and intelligent and a leader in her respective field.”

Other qualities they look for include being “confident,” “cosmopolitan,” “fashion-forward,” authentic and articulate. She also has to show that she is “universally empowered” and “a positive force for good.”

Its call for applications comes a month after Ong made headlines for wearing a self-designed costume that preached against Asian hate at the height of racially charged violence in the U.S. Ong attended the Miss Universe competition in Florida last month but lost to Miss Mexico’s Andrea Meza, who was crowned Miss Universe 2020.

Miss Universe Singapore is led by its national director Valerie Lim, who won the Miss Universe Singapore title in 2011, as well as creative fashion director Daniel Boey.
