Emily has previously had to overcome losing two jobs and a loss in confidence before entering herself into beauty pageants.
She said: "My favourite quote, which helped me change my life for the better has been 'you have the power to change anything, because you are the one who chooses your thoughts and you are the one who feels your feelings'
"In other words, life is not happening to you, you are the one creating it."
This year's competition includes a Bare Face Top Model round (no makeup), a Flawless Photographic round and the Plastfree Eco queen Fashion round where finalists are invited to create an outfit made from recycled materials.
There is also a talent round and new for this year, the Explore the Nation round where Emily will get to show off the best of Southend.
The winner of Miss England will go forward to the 70th Miss World final in Puerto Rico later this year with the chance of winning $100,000.
