The Top 10 women vying for Miss South Africa 2020 title have been announced and Gauteng has four contestants including Soweto’s very own Busisiwe Mmotla.

Mmotla said that she feels honoured to be the only contestant representing a big township like Soweto.

“There has been a lot of pressure especially people from Soweto. I’m honoured to represent a big township like Soweto, I hope to inspire other people to see that their dreams are valid. It means so much to me to be the only one representing the biggest township and I’m honoured,” Mmotla said.

The 27-year-old Mmotla is a senior FET phase teacher from Emdeni and said that being a teacher and a beauty queen comes with challenges.
“It’s very challenging because when you are a teacher you have certain expectations to meet like not walking naked in front of the camera because you have to set a good example for your learners. It’s difficult being a teacher while being in this competition but I manage. I’m here to inspire my kids and others and show them that being a teacher is not a death sentence but you can do other things as well and explore more, ” she said.

Chosen from thousands of entrants, this is definitely a big deal for Mmotla, who was at work when she received the news and says that she couldn’t celebrate as it felt like a dream.

“We have whittled these finalists down from literally thousands of entrants and we honestly believe we have found the 10 women who, right now, represent everything Miss South Africa stands for,” Says Stephanie Weil, CEO of the Miss South Africa Organisation.

Although the global pandemic might have interfered with how the usual prestigious event would be held, there’s still some exciting news. For the first time in the history of the Miss South Africa pageant, the contestants who make the Top 3 will represent the country at the world’s three most prestigious pageants. Previously, the Miss South Africa Organisation sent a representative to both Miss Universe and Miss World, but will also now be fielding a candidate at Miss Supranational.

The finals are set to be held on Saturday, October 24, in a glamorous and entertainment-packed pageant screened live on M-Net and Mzansi Magic and streamed for an international audience.
