St Thomas kicks off process to rename road in honour of Toni-Ann Singh

The St Thomas Municipal Corporation is to shortly begin the process of finding a suitable road in the parish to be renamed in honour of Miss World 2019, Toni-Ann Singh.

The intentions to rename a roadway was first revealed by the Mayor of Morant Bay, Michael Hue, during a tour of St Thomas by Singh on Sunday, December 22. The tour was part of activities that were held over three days to celebrate the Jamaican’s victory at the global pageant. 

On Thursday, Mayor Hue took further steps to make his promise a reality, when he made the formal announcement of the plan to rename a road to councillors at the monthly meeting of the corporation.

Hue explained that the corporation will first make contact with the relevant agencies before the road is identified. He said based on recommendations, a major road in the parish will then be chosen.

Singh, a 23-year-old native of Bath, St Thomas, bested 110 competitors from around the world on Saturday, December 14 at the Excel Convention Centre in London, England.

She is the fourth Jamaican to be crowned Miss World, and first since Lisa Hanna took home the title in 1993. Her predecessors also include Carole Joan Crawford in 1963 and Cindy Breakspeare in 1976. 

The Jamaican secured her place in the Top 40 of Miss World after winning the talent competition with her brilliant cover of Whitney Houston Have Nothing which she performed live minutes before being crowned Miss World.

Singh beat France’s Ophely Mezino, who finished in second place, and India’s Suman Rao, who ended in third place, to grab the prestigious title. The other finalist were Miss Nigeria, Nyekachi Douglas, and Miss Brazil, Elis Coelho.

Both Miss India and Miss Nigeria are to visit Jamaica in March. This stemmed from Miss Nigeria’s highly elated response on stage to the announcement of Singh’s victory, which has made her another darling of Jamaica.
