Bangkok, Feb 18 (efe-epa).- The Miss World beauty pageant for 2019 will be held in the month of December in Thailand, officials of the Miss World Organization announced on Monday.
Chairman and CEO of Miss World Organization, Julia Morley, made the announcement at a press conference in the Thai capital accompanied by the reigning Miss World 2018, Vanessa Ponce de Leon.
The date and city for the finals of the beauty pageant has not been decided yet, though the organizers had been considering the coastal city of Pattaya, one of the main tourist destinations in the country located some 150 kilometers (93 miles) southwest of Bangkok.
The 2018 edition was held on Dec. 8 in Sanya, a tropical city in Hainan island, in southeastern China, where Miss Mexico Vanessa Ponce de Leon was crowned winner by 2017 Miss World Manushi Chhillar from India.
Last year, Nicolene Pichapa Limsnukan became the first woman from Thailand to come runner-up at the Miss World competition.
The Miss World contest evaluates overall beauty, elegance, personality, poise, confidence, social awareness and the physical health of its participants.
Venezuela and India are the two countries with the most number of Miss World winners with six titles each.
Established in 1951 by Eric Morley in the United Kingdom, Miss World is the oldest-running beauty pageant in the world. The organization has been co-chaired by his wife Julia Morley, since he passed away in 2000.
The pageant was headquartered in London for 37 years, but in 1989 it was moved to Hong Kong, which was then still one of the last colonies of the erstwhile British Empire.
Since then, it has been held in places such as Sun City (South Africa), Atlanta (United States), the Seychelles and Bangalore (India), besides Warsaw (Poland) and Sanya.
Miss World has been one of the top international beauty pageants along with Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Earth, and Miss Asia-Pacific.
In December last year, Thailand hosted the 2018 Miss Universe pageant, considered the most important beauty contest in the world, which was won by Miss Philippines Catriona Gray.
